Mirror

Background Research
Many people care excessively about evaluations from others. They have no confidence, which infects their life and work. Some of them chose to have plastic surgery. Moreover, there are more and more people going to do the plastic surgery.

However, plastic surgery itself is something risky. The failure not only gives them illness, but also creates another psychological harm to them, and even more causes some extreme behaviors.

In contrast, there’s a kind of people, who have less attractive or even ugly faces but achieve their own value by their own efforts with confidence and positive attitude to life.

Theme
The self-recognition is much more important than others’ evaluations.

I hope my installation can call on people to affirm themselves, to be who they really are, and to be confident without caring about other people’s opinions, telling them the self-recognition from themselves values more than that from others.

QUESTIONNAIRE

By using questionnaire, I want to comprehend the ways used by people to observe themselves and then seek the simplest and most direct way to awaken people’s self-approval.

THE RESULTS OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE
Among the 30 participants, male are 10 and female are 20.
1. The male generally don’t care that much about others’ evaluations of their appearances while the female do.
2. The method people always use to observe themselves is with a mirror.
3. Female aged between 17 and 25 are generally not that satisfied with their current looking; Female from 30 to 45 care less about it.
4. Young female care more about their lookings and tend to make a plastic surgery; while the older they grow, the less attention they will pay on their appearance.

Through the questionnaire, I knew that the ‘‘mirror’’ was the most common way people use to get to know themselves. So I chose this object to develop an installation to awaken audience’s self-affirmation.

Inspiration
When I was playing Surface, my own face was reflected on the mirror-like screen, inspired by which I decided to make Surface into a wisdom mirror.

THE PROCESS

Content:
When you look into a seemingly ordinary mirror, suddenly it asks you an easy question: “Hi,am I pretty?” and then a ”√” and a “×” pop out. Which one will you choose?

Surface programming:
Set the mirror to provoke a question: Hi, am I pretty? Different choices will lead to different responses.

When you choose “√ ", hands in the mirror will applause for you, as an encouragement for your own self-approval.
When you choose “×”, the image will crash, as an expression of regret for your failure to approve yourself.
